Sounds insane, right? That&#8217;s what I thought too. Turns out sharks aren&#8217;t the terrifying monsters we think they are.<\/p>\n<p>But we&#8217;ve all seen the movie <em>&#8216;Jaws&#8217;<\/em> and Hollywood doesn&#8217;t lie. It&#8217;s why thousands of people around the world suffer from <em>Selachophobia<\/em>. Fear of sharks.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But who can blame them? Why on earth would any rational person swim in the ocean<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As for those who purposefully seek out the company of sharks they clearly have a death wish. Because shark attacks on humans around the world are exceedingly rare despite popular belief to the contrary.<\/p>\n<h2>Seeking The Company Of Sharks<\/h2>\n<p>As an adrenaline junkie, my tolerance level these days is high. Luckily Fiji delivered the goods. They have a <a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shark Reef Marine Reserve<\/a> located off the coast of the island of Beqa, where you can go swimming with up to 8 species of shark.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-275\" style=\"width: 1235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juquehytrip.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/p1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image wp-image-275 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/juquehytrip.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/p1.jpg\" alt=\"zoom-12760457-3\" width=\"1235\" height=\"822\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shark Reserve is because of the money flowing in from these dive trips.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To help finance shark research and compensate local villagers for their lost fishing grounds, <a title=\"Shark Diving Fiji\" href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beqa Adventure Divers<\/a> offers scuba diving trips into the marine reserve&#8217;s shark-infested waters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They let you get face-to-face with these underwater killers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because shark attacks on humans around the world are exceedingly rare despite popular belief to the contrary.<\/p>\n<h2>Shark Attack Odds<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_274\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-274\" style=\"width: 1235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juquehytrip.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/p2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image size-full wp-image-274\" src=\"https:\/\/juquehytrip.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/p2.jpg\" alt=\"They have a Shark Reef Marine Reserve located off the coast of the island of Beqa.\" width=\"1235\" height=\"822\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They have a Shark Reef Marine Reserve located off the coast of the island of Beqa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at some examples. How likely is a shark attack in the United States? Odds are greater that one of these will happen to you first:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You will die from a dog attack.<\/li>\n<li>You will die from a lightning strike.<\/li>\n<li>You will get killed by bees or wasps.<\/li>\n<li>You will be executed for a crime.<\/li>\n<li>You will be bitten by a human.<\/li>\n<li>You will die falling down in your home.<\/li>\n<li>Dick Cheney will shoot you on a hunting trip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As for <em>actual death<\/em> by shark attack, that&#8217;s even rarer. Like <a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1 in 3,748,067<\/a> to be exact. <strong>You are <a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more likely<\/a> to die while digging a sand hole on the beach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So stop digging those stupid things. They&#8217;re dangerous!<\/p>\n<h2>My First Shark Dive<\/h2>\n<p>Knowing these statistics made it a bit easier to join the professionals at Beqa Adventure for my first ever shark dive. They&#8217;ve been doing this for over 10 years with no problems.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-276\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juquehytrip.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/p3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image wp-image-276 \" src=\"https:\/\/juquehytrip.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/p3.jpg\" alt=\"zoom-17905255-3\" width=\"320\" height=\"481\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beqa Adventure Divers teamed up.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been <a title=\"Cenote Diving Mexico\" href=\"#\">scuba diving in caves<\/a> before, but diving with large Bull and possibly Tiger sharks was a big deal. These massive animals can grow 8 to 15 feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Both have a history (however rare) of attacks on humans. But, as I&#8217;ve learned over &amp; over again on my travels, breaking out of your comfort zone is a healthy thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you didn&#8217;t already know, feeding sharks like this is a bit controversial. Some say that it trains them to associate humans with food, increasing the odds of an attack.<\/p>\n<p>These diving trips pour much needed money into shark conservation &amp; research projects. Without that money, shark populations around the world will continue to rapidly decline. If dive operators don&#8217;t pay to help save the sharks, who will? You? The government?<\/p>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s wishful thinking in my opinion. It won&#8217;t happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ONLY reason marine life is protected at Fiji&#8217;s Shark Reserve is because of the money flowing in from these dive trips. Beqa Adventure Divers teamed up with local villages to ban all fishing here in 2004. The result?
